On Friday March I3th the Junior League of Lansing, a valued partner of Weekend Survival Kits, will be presenting a day-long Poverty Conference. This event has been organized by Justine Bell, last year’s WSK Volunteer of the Year. This day-long event features a keynote by author Terie Dreussi Smith who wrote Bridges Out of Poverty. “This is an important opportunity to learn more about poverty here in our community and to showcase the good work that local nonprofits do to help those less-fortunate,” shared Bell.
Weekend Survival Kits will be present as one of 12 service organizations to present on topics related to poverty. In addition, the day starts with a poverty simulation experience which helps participants “walk a mile in the shoes of someone experiencing poverty.” The simulation uses real-life scenarios to challenge those taking on a role in the life of a family in poverty to make choices over a 60-minute one-month simulation.
WSK has recently acquired a poverty simulation program for education and development purposes. The WSK simulation kit and facilitation services are available for a fee, with most of the funds generated from the simulation dedicated to purchasing food for the kits. The Junior League Poverty Conference is a great way to debut the simulation. As demand continues to increase for our weekend food kit program WSK expects to use the simulation program to generate support for funds to pay for food kits by targeting potential supporters, faith communities and mid-Michigan based corporations.

As part of the Junior League Poverty Conference, the poverty simulation experience will start the day. Junior League has made a generous donation to Weekend Survival Kits for the use of the Poverty Simulation.
