Weekend Survival Kits mobilizes communities to provide food on the weekends to children in grades K-5 who may otherwise go hungry ultimately helping remove barriers to academic success.
** Weekend Survival Kits provisionally serves children in grades 6-12.
Every school-aged child in America has the food he/she needs to properly engage at school and have a fighting chance to succeed academically. We will strive to increase participation in the NSLP, SBP and WSK program to ensure the children who qualify will have food EVERY DAY of the week during the school year.
Our basic philosophy is simple: many hands make light work and each of us can make a difference, and together we can create a community of caring for families in greatest need. The secret to the success of Weekend Survival Kits is due largely because of the support of countless volunteers and generous donors.
Now named Weekend Survival Kits, the organization then named Many Hands, began in 2012, after many years of thought and planning we saw the power of helping others and the need to lead by example.
An organization cannot grow based on just a vision. It grows when individuals, churches, schools, businesses, and civic organizations join up and volunteer, contribute their time, talent and investment in helping those who need our help. There are children in every school who need our help to address issues of food insecurity which may be causing barriers to their academic success.
Recognizing that churches and schools cannot possibly provide a hand whenever the opportunity to help arises, we count on recommendations from these two centers of leadership to help serve those most in need. We rely on local service organizations such as Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis, Masonic Lodges, Optimist Clubs and other private organizations for references and resources.
Thank you to Okemos Community Church, First Baptist Church of Okemos, First United Methodist Church in Howell, Haslett Community Church and West Minster Presbyterian Church of Detroit for providing us with a space to pack and/or temporarily store the Weekend Survival Kits.

These programs are intended to meet the nutritional needs of children during non-school hours, specifically on weekends.
Teachers and school nurses have found that in some instances, Monday morning comes, and they are forced to compete against hunger for the attention of their students. By targeting children who receive reduced price breakfast or lunch at school, Weekend Survival Kits aims to provide supplemental nourishment, so young minds are ready to learn.
