For the past 8 years Weekend Survival Kits has hosted a run to raise program awareness and funding to purchase food for hungry kids. Our mission: to eliminate hunger as an obstacle to learning. You may be receiving this because in the past you have participated in our Hunger Heroes race series.
Looking at the impact that COVID-19 was having on families in the school systems we serve, we were shocked at the number of families showing up to ask for even more support. Currently, we are bracing ourselves for the inevitable increase in demand for the supplemental weekend food kits which is predicted to come. Naturally, we don’t have near the funds to fill the weekend food gap and now many families will have to deal with lack of food which will be greater, especially in many schools which may be offering remote learning options. Local food banks are working to prepare the USDA free/reduced school meal program as a pick-up. No matter what your local school system is doing come September …the need for food supports will be greater. With your HELP Weekend Survival Kits will be able to increase our commitment to covering the weekend gap in the current schools we serve.
Because some school systems will be offering modified in-person teaching opportunities and others will be largely online until the all clear, we will be collaborating with our Food Bank partners to create a food delivery hybrid plan. We will, however, still be packing kits, with an all new safety protocol.
With the increase in demand, we have decided to host the Weekend Survival Kits Hunger Heroes Race Series …as a VIRTUAL race. (Earlier this year we had decided to retire the race, but felt like the COVID-19 pandemic is a huge challenge to the families we serve.) This Virtual race opportunity allows our dedicated runners and sponsors a way to help support our mission without the added expenses of a physical race. And that means every dollar raised will be spent on the direct purchase of food for the kits, rather than race expenses!
Should you choose to register for our virtual race, you have the flexibility to run/walk your own race at your own pace and place! If you would like a race shirt, please register before September 1st. You may complete your race anytime between September 1 – 26. When you go to register, please note that you can create your own fund-raiser associated with your race and increase the impact.
Runners who complete their own race are encouraged to take a photo of your race and share on social media, and report your time, distance, date and name to: firstname.lastname@example.org We appreciate your on-going support in GIVING HOPE to hungry kids.
